Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap
Jun 25 2012

The Achievement Gap is REAL

Last week was a whirlwind and here I am, at the beginning of a new week ready to do it all again. I taught three times last week and each time I learned something new. About myself. About my fivve students. At the end of the week I knew that I could have a powerful impact of my students, even if I will only be teaching them for a total of five weeks.

Yesterday, myself and three friends went to the church of one of my students. Mt. Caramel Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi is an example of true community. We all really enjoyed ourselves. After church we went out for some true Southern food – Fried Pickles and Sweet Tea.

Below is a video I created with the help of 12 corps members. We each shared our first week experience – teaching for the first time, meeting our students, diagnostic testing and dealing with the results. We shared our hopes for our students this summer and what we want them to leave summer school with. I hope you enjoy it and if you are a current corps member please feel free to share your experience in the comment section!
